Table Width vs Length Explained

Ordering the correct size tablecloth or table protector starts with measuring your table accurately. One of the most common questions we receive is which side is the width and which side is the length. The width is always the shortest measurement across the table, while the length is the longest measurement from one end to the other. Whether you're buying a PVC tablecloth, wipe clean vinyl tablecloth, oilcloth tablecloth or a clear PVC table protector, using the correct measurements ensures the perfect fit and helps you choose the right size first time.
Quick guide
Width
The width is the shortest side of your table.
Measure straight across the table from one side to the opposite side.
Length
The length is the longest side of your table.
Measure from one end of the table to the other.
Round tables
Measure the diameter, which is the distance straight across the centre of the table.
Square tables
Measure one side. Both the width and length will be the same.
Oval tables
Measure the longest point for the length and the widest point for the width.
Helpful tips
- Always measure the tabletop, not an existing tablecloth.
- Measure in centimetres for the most accurate results.
- Measure twice before ordering.
- Include any extension leaves if you normally use them.
- If ordering a tablecloth, remember to allow enough overhang on each side.
- If ordering a clear PVC table protector, most customers order the protector to match the exact tabletop size.
Why correct measurements matter
Taking a few moments to measure your table correctly can help avoid ordering the wrong size. A correctly sized PVC tablecloth or oilcloth tablecloth will hang evenly around your table, while a clear table protector will sit neatly on the tabletop, helping protect it from scratches, spills and everyday wear.
